Orangutans are found in tropical rainforest and tropical deciduous forest. The species may be found on low-level swamps and in mountainous regions. Orangutans have been seen in places 1.5 km in elevation. The Orangutan is mainly an arboreal species. It spends most of time in trees searching for food and resting.
Orangutans are solitary animals. They need large home ranges with available fruits and shelter. The species can live only in forested areas. Habitat loss is considered the number one threat for the population of Orangutans.
Orangutans - Food Habits
Orangutans feed mainly on fruits. Figs are considered their favorite food. In fact, there are various species of figs. They ripen in different seasons providing Orangutans with available food. It is believed that the moving pattern of the species is dependent on the areas where figs are available at the moment.
The species can also feed on leaves, buds, and flowers. Soil that is rich in minerals and other nutritious foods such as eggs of small vertebrates are also part of Orangutan diet. The way the species drinks is very interesting. It will reach a hole in a tree, lap water with its hands, and drink.

Orangutans can rarely be seen in groups. As a rule, the species is solitary. Males and females meet only during the mating season. Small groups consist mainly of females with the young and probably a male. Orangutan groups are usually about three or four animals.
Male Orangutans tend to be aggressive toward same-sexed animals. A home range of a male Orangutan is usually large. It is about 2-6 sq. km in size. The home range of a male may overlap with home ranges of a few females. Communication is mainly vocal. Orangutans may roar, scream, and smack their lips to express a variety of emotions. By doing this, Orangutans warn intruders about their property rights and attract other-sexed animals.
